Shawsheen Animal Hospital treats exotic pets, too!
Dr. Mayer in Tewksbury, MA is happy to welcome the following exotics as patients:
- Guinea pigs
- Bearded dragons
- Leopard geckos
Despite how different these unique animals are from dogs and cats, they still require the care of a veterinarian who understands their needs and common health problems. Whether you are a veteran exotic pet owner or a beginner, we’ll be glad to support and guide you in keeping your companion healthy for as long as possible.
What Kind of Care Does an Exotic Pet Need?
Exotic small mammals and reptiles all benefit from seeing their veterinarian at least once a year for a physical examination, a discussion about their care and behaviors at home, and any recommended lab work to screen for disease. Exotic pets are similar to dogs and cats in that they are skilled at hiding illness, but this can lead to severe and possibly life-threatening problems for them.
In addition to routine physical examinations, we can also provide:
- Routine blood and fecal testing
- Recommendations for nutrition, housing, husbandry, and more
- Vaccinations (for certain species only)
- X-rays to check for issues or diagnose an existing problem
