Advanced Diagnostics

Advanced Diagnostics

A physical wellness exam is an excellent means of preventive care for your pet, but it’s not always enough if symptoms are present. That’s why we rely on advanced diagnostic equipment and testing for a more in-depth internal examination of your pet.  As always, we make your pet’s health and safety our first priority. Shawsheen Animal Hospital’s diagnostic services include:

  • X-rays (Radiographs)

X-rays allow us to examine your pet’s bones, heart, lungs, and abdomen and can detect fractures, foreign bodies, and several other conditions. Our hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology, so results are immediate, much clearer, and we can easily be enhanced and emailed to a cardiac, orthopedic, or internal medicine specialist for immediate consults, if necessary. All X-rays are read and interpreted by a board-certified radiologist.

  • Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a form of diagnostic imaging technology that’s used to evaluate a pet’s internal organs in real-time using sound waves. Ultrasound can be used to detect several conditions, including masses, tumors, underlying heart conditions, and pregnancy. Echocardiograms (cardiac ultrasounds) allow veterinarians to see inside a patient’s heart. Abdominal and cardiac ultrasound services are available at our hospital via traveling board-certified specialists who routinely visit our practice.

  • On-Site Laboratory

While our diagnostic imaging services help us detect physical conditions, our in-house laboratory helps us immediately establish baseline health for your pet as well as detect diseases and other illnesses using blood, urine, and fecal samples. We also perform pre-anesthetic blood work on animals undergoing surgery. We utilize a reference laboratory to complement our in-house services so we can offer a wider and more comprehensive range of wellness and non-routine testing.

  • Digital Dental X-Rays

The vast majority of pets over age three suffer from some form of periodontal disease. At advanced stages, tooth decay and gingivitis can significantly impact a pet’s quality of life, making eating difficult due to mouth pain. Plus, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause heart, liver, and kidney complications. Keeping up with the cleanliness of your pet’s mouth and their overall dental health can prevent years of discomfort, disease, and lost teeth.

Because we understand just how crucial good dental health is to a pet’s quality of life, Shawsheen Animal Hospital offers digital dental x-rays as part of our comprehensive suite of dental services.

This cutting-edge diagnostic technology gives our veterinarians the power to see below your pet’s gum line where dental disease really does its dirty work. Digital x-rays produce a complete picture of each of your pet’s teeth, as well as the teeth roots and jawbones. The thorough nature of digital x-rays means that otherwise hidden conditions like broken roots, cysts, tumors, and unerupted teeth can be seen clearly and dealt with quickly before they become harder to treat – and more expensive – problems.

Digital radiography also saves you and your pet invaluable time. Unlike traditional radiographs, digital x-rays don’t need to be printed out. They’re instantly uploaded to a computer where they can be enhanced and manipulated for more accurate diagnoses of cavities and other issues. Perhaps most reassuring to the pet owner is the fact that digital radiography reduces the amount of radiation exposure to the patient by 70 percent.

Digital x-rays require pets be sedated, so prior to your pet’s dental appointment, we’ll need to conduct bloodwork to make sure they’re healthy enough to undergo anesthesia.
