Pet Wellness Care in Tewksbury
Benjamin Franklin once said that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and the same is true of pets. Treating health problems can be expensive and difficult, and some conditions are life threatening. That’s why Shawsheen Animal Hospital’s primary focus is on preemptive care. Our goal is to prevent health issues from ever developing so your four-legged friend can live a long, happy, healthy life. We do this by providing education on the benefits of annual wellness exams, vaccines, proper nutrition, dental care, regular wellness blood testing, and parasite prevention for adult and senior pets.
The annual wellness exam is intended as the first line of defense against pet health problems. These visits allow our doctors to examine your pet from nose to tail and document any areas of concern. If necessary, we can discuss treatment or advanced diagnostic (blood testing, etc.) recommendations. Since gum disease is a common condition seen in pets age 3 and older, we may recommend a comprehensive dental exam as well, depending on our findings.
Pet vaccines provide protection against potentially fatal viruses and diseases, including rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, and Lyme disease, making them an important component of your companion’s preventive health care. Shawsheen Animal Hospital offers routine vaccines with annual reminders that are customized to your pet’s lifestyle.
A proper diet is just as important to your pet’s health as routine examinations and vaccinations. Our technicians will provide you with the helpful recommendations regarding which diet (prescription or non-prescription) will best fit your pet’s nutritional needs.
Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more than just pesky. Did you know they’re linked to diseases like allergy dermatitis (flea-borne), Lyme disease (tick-borne), and heartworm disease (mosquito-borne)? Without treatment, some parasitic diseases, such as heartworm disease, can be fatal. This is why keeping your pet on a parasite preventive medication all year-round is so important. We can discuss our recommendations for your pet during the wellness visit.
